The first houses here were fibro and weatherboard beach cottages. Brick veneer followed through the 1980s and 1990s, and in the years after 2000 large modern homes have gone up as owners knock down older places on the ocean-view blocks. Salt and age hit the older end

A cottage that has faced the ocean breeze for fifty years has had half a century of salt on its outside pipe, and taps, valves and hot water cylinders give out well before the same parts would inland. Is there a fee just for coming out?
